3Fairly complex, but with few features
By Just a guy
WHAT IS IN THE BOX?

This replaces a simple knob lock (like the knob on your bedroom door). It is not a deadbolt set. It gives you an inside and outside lever and a strike plate. The photo at the top of the item description shows what you get. The photo further down in the detail of the item description (with the maid) shows a deadbolt. You do not get this.

You also get a plug-in-between light controller and a small box that attaches to your internet router (it requires an empty ethernet port). You get two standard keys for the lock.

PHYSICAL INSTALLATION OF THE LOCK

Installation was pretty simple if you have ever swapped out a lock. Initially the tongue part got stuck, but after I worked it a bit, it loosened up. The inside plate (with the plastic battery box) was a bit tricky to lineup.

The inside plate has plastic and rubber buttons to lock and unlock. These look terrible and there is a reason you don't see a photo of the inside portion on the website. This listing shows the inside portion. Schlage FE599NX CAM 619 ACC 619 Home Keypad Lever with Nexia Home Intelligence, Satin Nickel

The lock handles stick out a bit more than normal from the door - so be aware of this if you have screen door. You might have some interference.

SOFTWARE SETUP

You MUST use the website to do anything with this lock - including reset the passcode - which is a stupid limitation in my opinion. You should be able to change the usercode simply from the lock keypad.

If you follow the instructions exactly, it all worked for me - although it took a few tries to pair the router box with the lock.

This should simply work via wifi between the lock and your wifi in your house. It doesn't work over wifi at all. It requires the black box to create another proprietary wireless network.

The website requires you to list your home address (not optional), phone number (not optional), email (not optional), and even prompts you to upload a photo of your house (optional). Think about that for a moment. I am telling a website exactly where the lock is located, what the house looks like, and what the code is. Sure, it is password protected, but that just sounds like a pretty unintelligent assembly of information to have all in one place. If there were a security breach on the Nexia side of things, someone could scan through photos looking for the nicest looking house in their area and would have access to the lock codes. Heck, they could probably even see when you were no longer home.

FUNCTIONS

The internet interface is terrible. Do you want to lock your unlocked door from the website? Good luck. It can be done, but it is very difficult to get it to work. Want to unlock the door? No such luck. Maybe for a moment, but you can't unlock it and leave it unlocked from the website.

Want an alert whenever the door is opened? Nope. Only when unlocked with a code (no alert if opened with the key).

Want an alert when the battery starts to get low? Nope.

You can set specific access codes (I think there are 15 allowed) and set a schedule for when each code is active.

LIGHT CONTROLLER

There is not much to say about the light controller. It plugs in between the plug and the outlet. The website allows you to turn the light on or off and to dim the light. You can set a "scene" in the website to turn on the light when the door code is used. You can also set a schedule for the light. The dimmer worked on my halogen and incandescent lights.

One big negative is that you cannot override the switch on the hardware. There is a button the white controller, but it is only used for pairing - you cannot push the button to manually energize the outlet. This is a stupid limitation.

COST

If you just want a keypad lock, there are much less expensive options. Schlage FE575 PLY 626 ELA Plymouth Keypad Entry with Auto-Lock and Elan Levers, Brushed Chrome This is trying to get you into the whole system of Nexia products.

You also much subscribe to the service for $8 or $10 per month. If you do not subscribe, you cannot access ANY features. You cannot change access codes. I would have thought that the paid service was only for remote access. That is not the case. Unless you pay for the service (or get a complimentary pass) you cannot use the light controller and cannot do anything with the lock. Don't buy this thinking you will just ignore the internet service - you are wasting your money.

FOLLOW-UP - The black box, which connects to your router, is needed to do any web activity. While mine seemed to work fine at first, I now have a problem that it keeps becoming unconnected from the network. I have to cycle the power plug and repair it to the lockset and the light module at least once a day to keep it running. Very disappointing.

4Nice Hardware and Software With Potential
By Glenn R. Howes
This is my first entry into home automation, and I'm fairly impressed with this starter kit.

First, I like the door lock. It's an attractive, sturdy looking piece of hardware with an easy action lever; my children with their small hands have a lot easier time with levers than with knobs, and who hasn't struggled with a door knob when bringing in a load of groceries? However, the number buttons are small and slippery, thus taking some concentration to press. Pressing the "Schlage" button over the keyboard does light them up for easy reading, but a visitor might not knows this and struggle to type in their PIN in the dark. One security reason for the small, slippery button design might be to prevent uneven visible wear of the 4 buttons you actually press; I'm sure that's why the printed number is below the surface.

Installation, which in my case was a replacement, took less than 20 minutes. If you've replaced door hardware before, the only extra steps involve threading a cable through the door and connecting it to the other side, and inserting 4 AA batteries.

The lock is of the type where locking disengages the outside lever from the bolt, while unlocking connects the lever to the bolt action. (To be clear, this is not a dead bolt lock). This design allows the lock to use a minimum of energy while still allowing remote unlocking; you'll notice that the deadbolts Schlage sells do not allow remote locking apparently because to do so (physically sliding the bolt into position) would be too battery intensive, and not allow for two years between battery replacements. I've installed a separate key operated dead bolt for when everyone is inside the house already or we leave for a trip.)

Two numeric keys and two physical keys are provided in the package. My kids quickly learned how to enter the unlocking code so operation is literally child's play.

As for the home automation part of the package, there were a few kinks, but in general it seems useful. The most cumbersome part of the process is attaching and removing the 9V battery while pairing the router with the lock and then the dimmer. It might have been a better idea to put the battery terminals external to the router as you only attach the battery for a few seconds during the pairing, and it is awkward getting it into and out of its cramped battery compartment.

Also, the website once logged into and connected to the router wasn't able to upgrade the device's firmware, showing some ambiguous error. So I'm stuck at the firmware version installed at the factory and can only hope the device functions properly.

But once I've registered on the website, paired the dimmer and the lock, downloaded the iPhone app, registered the iPhone account I'm set. I can control a lamp near the door or set it up to turn on when the door is unlocked; although i'm limited to old fashioned and energy hogging incandescent bulbs as neither CFL or LED bulbs are supported with no mention of dimmable LED bulbs. With the iPhone app, I can control the dimmer from the same room or anywhere else with an Internet connection.

When my kids were fooling around punching numbers into the lock, I received an e-mail saying the lock had been given a bad code, which would be helpful to alert me to malfeasance. And if a relative were to come by the house when we were away, I could momentarily unlock the door to allow them entrance, or give them a temporary PIN for the length of their stay.

The software is OK, although the web site could use better navigation. It's all reasonably competent but could use polish. The iPhone app could be simplified; it's not optimized for the common case of 1 lock and 1 dimmer, both of which should be controllable from one screen and not require me to tab around to find. In both cases, I have hopes for improvement, but we'll see as it is now it's serviceable, barely. If it doesn't improve, I won't be keeping the web service after my trial period expires.

I liked having key pad locks so much and the appearance of this lock, I bought a Schlage deadbolt for one of my other doors, but not the Internet enabled version, as I can't see needing to remotely control two entry doors.

4Schlage Great, Nexia has Kinks
By Anna Hope
The unit comes very nicely packaged with good documentation on how to step through the process

Installation of the Lock:
This went well and was completed within 15 minutes including removal of the old lock.I followed the documentation step by step and had the lock functional and tested the codes provided and both codes worked without issue.
This lock unit is solid, there is some cheap plastic that lets the device down a little in the appearance department (on the back side)but the external unit is very nice and very solid. One disappointment I had is that changing batteries requires removal of a portion of internal housing. Why not have a slide out unit to hold the batteries - this could be engineered a little better but it's a minor gripe.

Installation of the Nexia Bridge:
This was somewhat more problematic. I was initially unable to register the bridge successfully and multiple device resets did not resolve the Issue. I attempted swapping the Ethernet cable and this did not resolve the problem either. A call to Nexia support however was able to resolve the Issue quickly and efficiently. This involved a few quick steps in a precise order and the device registered online. I successfully enrolled the lock and was able to control it - however I could not add codes. Apparently this is a known Issue (encountered after support was closed) and a quick search resulted in finding a documented procedure in which I had to un-enroll the lock and re-enroll. I was then able to successfully add a code for the neighbor to use. The process of enrollment is a little fragile and seems like there are hurdles that can be encountered.

Features:
Using the keyless entry has been great and once configured the service works well. We have text alerts set up so we get notification when each of us uses the device. I could see this feature being useful for kids to see that they have arrived home on schedule. The Nexia system is expandable to incorporate video cameras and thermostats. I also have a NEST thermostat and have found that to be much easier to bring online. This is the difference between using Zwave technology with the Nexia and wifi with the NEST. The mobile app is quite comprehensive and allows for codes to be configured directly from your mobile device and also unlock the door - this is nice for letting someone in on short notice. The authentication for the mobile app is two stage. First download the app, connect to the account and then authenticate from the MyNexia account to activate a mobile device. Given the amount of control MyNexia offers this two stage authentication is reassuring. The level of service seem good however I do not know if it justifies the annual cost versus configuring your own Zwave home network.

5 out of 5 stars for the lock and 3 out of 5 for the mynexia service for a cumaltive 4 out of 5 stars.
